I was fortunate enough to present at the "Reading for the Love of it" Conference in Toronto this year. My presentation was called "Student Agency: Inquiry-based instruction, while putting anti-racism and anti-oppression at the centre of learning". At the conference, I spoke with some colleagues about Inquiry-based learning and how that looks through an anti-racist and anti-oppressive stance.
Earlier this year I wrote an article titled "Strategies To Transform Your Learning Environment" for the "Speaking of Reading" newsletter that gives a brief overview of the topic I spoke of during the presentation. In the article, I highlight four strategies that educators can take to pursue an anti-racist and anti-oppressive approach to learning. The article is linked in the image to the left.
The need for questioning, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and reflection has never been greater. Now, more than ever, it is time to make big changes in your classrooms, teaching pedagogies, and practice. THIS IS THE PURPOSE OF THE PRESENTATION! Student agency, inquiry-based learning, and equitable practices will help you transform your learning environment. In our session, we pave the path for educators who are interested in inquiry-based learning and how that looks through the lens of equity. How do you ensure students’ voices, stories, cultures, and histories are incorporated in your classrooms? In our session, we share ways educators can authentically transform their curriculum, learning materials, groupings, displays, and resources, to be culturally responsive through the lens of anti-racism and anti-oppression. Check out the Attendee Handout for the presentation linked above!
For anyone who attended the presentation at RFTLOI, Thank you! I hope you enjoyed it and took something away from it. If you did not attend or were not able to, check out the handout and reach out to me! I would be more than happy to engage in conversation with you and learn more together!
